I had no clue that so many actors have performed the position of Superman. Christopher Reeves is my favorite.

rjbatty, thank you so much on your insightful analysis. We write hoping for responses like this. I agree wholeheartedly with your opinion regarding George Reeves. He was the perfect Clark of them all, and his Superman was calm and self-assured. If there was ever a Justice League movie that could pluck actors out of any period, George Reeves would be the one I might most have wished to see work together with other actors/heroes.

Chris Reeve made the most convincing Superman from a physical perspective. It is tough to imagine someone trying better within the childrens flash t shirt dress costume. He introduced a charm and honesty to the role and made it his own. The more and more poor scripts had been a disgrace.

Tom Welling grew nicely into the role on tv, although his talents as an actor had been extra restricted. He all the time had an honest supporting cast to play off of (very like Dean Cain within the Lois and Clark series), and it made for some good moments.

Brandon Routh was restricted by the material–it was unfair to ask him to easily be a Chris Reeve clone. I wish he may have had another movie to show himself because I feel he could have performed a wonderful job.

You are completely appropriate–time erodes our memories and perceptions of those who came first. I have had the same argument with basketball followers who claim Michael Jordan to be the better of all time, whereas older fans regularly opt for Wilt Chamberlain. There are fewer of us round who remember George Reeves than there once were, which is a shame. If only he actually could be transplanted into the 21st century, the place special results may add the same surprise to his portrayal of the Man of Steel that it has to his successors.

Thanks again to your terrific response–I look forward to updating this article after the subsequent movie. Take care.

Mike: You possibly can discover something very obvious along with your chart, i.e.the older actors who performed Superman have acquired many less votes than the newer. With the passage of time, individuals merely die or forget or don’t log on to HubPages, thus their vote is underneath-sampled. Whereas your intentions are pure, the hope of discovering the most admired Superman can not help however be skewed by time. The general public has the retention span of an insect. It should at all times discover the next iteration to be the “best.” And that is unfair for plenty of causes. Cinematography continues to enhance, the flexibility of a studio to review demographics continues to improve. Whereas one generation fades into oblivion, the subsequent exerts the loudest voice. We’ve a technology as we speak that barely heard of Elvis Presley or even The Beatles — so how can we expect them to guage the roles of prior Supermen impartially It simply can’t be finished. Speaking for myself, I’m simply barely conscious of the work Kirk Alyn did as Superman — so how can I pretty judge him among the others I am not saying that you simply purposely created a false survey, but, effectively, frankly, that’s all it is going to ever end up being.

Secondly, I’m not making an attempt in the slightest to discourage you from building the sort of Hub you feel is most engaging. I feel that the work you’ve got carried out right here is excellent — far exceeding any article I’ve come across. So, I do know your intentions are good and trustworthy. I simply must remark that neither you nor I could derive at a “finest” Superman because each Superman belongs to a selected age — and that age is advantaged/disadvantaged by its longevity.

I watched some however not all of “Lois and Clark” and hardly gave any discover to Dean Cain as a result of I couldn’t tear my eyes off of Terri Hatcher. (This is one other Hub you might attempt creating …) I found Hatcher to be the sexiest Lois and i basically had no need for a Superman to be in the sequence. Dean Cain just appeared like, effectively, type of a distraction.

In contrast to everyone else on the planet, I found Kate Bosworth to also be a scene stealer in “Superman Returns,” though I nonetheless give excessive credit score to Brandon Routh (who I didn’t fully overlook).

The next film,”Superman: The Man of Steel,” will readjust our opinions — up or down, but the disagreement will go on until the older generations merely cease voting because they are all useless. If I were alive throughout the nineteen thirties when Superman first arrived in all his colorful glory — and if I were to be proven a costume to be worn by Henry Cavill vs. what I saw within the comics, I don’t suppose there can be a lot argument about which was the superior design. The design that fit 1930s America evidently will not be the same design that matches the early twenty first Century. And I am positive after i see Amy Adams on the screen as Lois, I will immediately overlook any of her progenitors.

For me George Reeves personified Superman — regardless of the low price range and the whole lot else. Why As a result of he was the most mature of the lot. The scripts by no means bought a lot in the best way of whether or not he was torn between being Superman or Clark Kent. No. He performed each roles with out conflict. He was all the time regular, confident. The thought of marrying Lois would have seemed ludicrous. Reeves (despite what we read) got here throughout as a protecting, loving and gentle Superman — one who was didn’t undergo from id battle and maintained a self-assurance that none of his predecessors had been able to grasp (or given the possibility to grasp).

I thought it was a uncooked deal that Christopher Reeve faced one picture after one other with a diminishing price range and forged. I assumed it was a raw deal that Brandon Routh did not get a chance to prove himself without being hamstrung as a Christopher Reeve clone. The film biz is ruthless, that’s for certain.

I hope the Henry Cavill Superman will knock our socks off, but I’ll all the time have emotional emotions for the actors who came earlier than. In America, who gets to play the next Superman is of larger significance than who plays the next Hamlet.

rjbatty, thanks to your feedback. Ultimately you’re appropriate–the order is all a matter of opinion, and the poll at the bottom of the hub reflects that to a large diploma. I will do an replace as soon as the new Superman comes out, however I feel it’s only appropriate to attend. I can not assist but surprise how you would rate the actors. In case you are of a thoughts to, cease by once more and let me know. Till then, thanks again.

Fascinating Hub. I don’t agree along with your particular order, but that’s okay. It’s all a matter of opinion, I suppose. You would possibly need to do an replace re. the upcoming Superman: Man of Steel (regardless that none of us have seen it as of this date).

Thanks, Fanboy. Chris Reeve was my favorite of all the actors to play Superman, as nicely.
I appreciate your stopping by.

Hey Mike, implausible hub. I like Superman, and Christopher Reeve is my all-time favorite actor in the function.

Trusouldj, thanks to your feedback. Whereas I used to be a bit exhausting on the Superboy series and the actors who performed the role, I favored the present and appreciated the work Newton and Christopher did. I at all times believed they’d have executed higher with better scripts, but I at all times felt their place within the history of Superman is justified. Their present was indeed, “Smallville before there was Smallville”.

trusouldj 6 years ago from Indiana
Thanks for together with Newton and Christopher from the Superboy series. This present was the unique Smallville, however was pushed off the air in favor of creating Lois and Clark. In reality, one of the Superboy actors auditioned and was favored for the Dean Cain position till they realized he’d in been within the costume earlier than.

Surlyoldcat, thanks for stating that Superman made his first appearance in 1938. I had not observed my error and i admire the correction. I will be aware it instantly, and i thank you once more. I remember the old costumes, also. A pal of mine had a Batman costume that he merely treasured. I had a Superman costume when I used to be younger, as effectively.

Thanks on your comments, and for noticing my error. I appreciate it a terrific deal.
surlyoldcat 7 years ago

I hate to be the bee within the bonnet, but superman debuted in 1938, not 1939. That was the 12 months Batman appeared in Detective Comics.

However that is just litle nitpick, this text kicked A….uhm…backside. WHat an ideal hub for around this time of 12 months. Remember the old vynil costumes I had Batman, Superman, Spider-Man and wore all of them till they have been rendered competely useless.

Thanks for stirring up those memories. I am going to relish this at all times.
Sjk6101983, thanks for stopping by. I never noticed ‘Hollywoodland’ however will see if I can give it a look someday. It sounds intriguing–George Reeves had an attention-grabbing life and profession. Thanks very much for the suggestion.

sjk6101983 7 years ago from Milwaukee, WI
Did anyone ever see “Hollywoodland” where Ben Affleck performed George Reeves Any Superman fan ought to watch that movie. I am not into the whole superhero scene really myself – I just love old Hollywood movies – and that i loved the story behind this movie.

Hey, Tom. Channel 50 had Superman Returns on tonight, so I acquired to see a few of it again earlier than sitting down here. It did not change something. Routh was sadly doomed to imitate Chris Reeve. It nearly appeared that was what they expected of Kevin Spacey whereas selecting up the place Gene Hackman left off, but Spacey had the expertise to make the role his own. (Who was better as Luthor, Hackman or Spacey Don’t reply too shortly…)

I appreciated Superman Returns, however forgot how much they imitated the primary Superman movie. If we have been to consider that Superman Returns picks up 5 years or so after Superman (or Superman II) left off, would Superman and Lois actually be repeating things they said to one another previously

Properly, thanks for stopping by, and it is a professional question–who was higher as Luthor
Yes. It must have been quite a scary task to approach the role of Superman when you have got the performance of Reeves continuously looking over your shoulder. It can be like somebody trying to drag-off a redo of “Citizen Kane”–or for readers unfamiliar with anything that occurred before the yeqar 2000–someone making an attempt to do The Joker once more, with Heath Ledger’s maniacal chortle consistently ringing in your ears. Query: they managed to honor Ledger with an Oscar (although, alas, he had to die to get it), why couldn’t they have given one to Reeves Answer: As a result of Oscar is simply allowed to get it proper 25% of the time. Or so it would appear.

Hello, Tom! Feels like we’re in agreement about Reeve, a minimum of, if not Catwoman. Chris Reeve was born to play Superman, and in a manner it is simple to grasp why they tried so hard to get Brandon Routh to look and act like Reeve. If you cannot prime his performance, you mimic it, I assume. The Superman film was what tremendous-hero motion pictures have been purported to be like, and it proved you would get it right, blazing the trail for Howard the Duck and his contemporaries. It was indeed a shame that they could not produce higher sequels. The second movie was honest, but Richard Pryor as a hapless adversary within the third film was not a good suggestion, even if Pryor was a relatively scorching display presence at the time. And the fourth film isn’t even worth mentioning….

The story is that the intent is to make one other Superman film, however comparable in (dark) fashion to the newest Batman choices. I hope not–Superman and Batman lend themselves to several types of storytelling, and it can be the fallacious type for Superman. We shall see, I suppose.

Well, take care.

In contrast to your article about the varied Catwoman actresses, I agree with you 100% here, although if I would tackled the subject, I would have made it clear there was a large gulf between 1st and 2nd place. Of all of the performances of each super-hero film ever made, Christopher Reeve gave the only greatest efficiency of all–not counting Heath Ledger’s as The Joker which belongs in a universe all its own. He was able to deliver absolute sincerity to the role, all of the whereas sustaining a twinkle in his eye–a balancing act that only a few actors may have pulled off. Add to this his physical beauty, the just lately pumped-up body completely suited to the function, and a comic deftness which introduced hilarity to his portrayal of Clark Kent and you have a perfect storm of display screen presence and performing skill. It is too bad they weren’t able to provide higher scripts for the sequels. Cheers!

Habee, thanks for stopping by. Chris Reeve was my favorite, additionally.
Holle Abee 7 years ago from Georgia

Nice hub! I had to go with Reeve.
WeakvsFire, thanks for reading. I appreciated Chris Reeves the very best additionally. Your remark about darker heroes is useless on–I read someplace that the reason one other Superman film wasn’t made was as a result of the success of the Batman flicks made producers look for ways to offer a “darker” Superman. A nasty thought, in my opinion; Superman doesn’t lend itself to the identical kind of storytelling.

I very much approve of the job Tom Welling has executed on Smallville. You are right concerning the scripts from the last few seasons. I think the present suffered from the loss of the actor taking part in Lex Luthor–with out Superman’s main nemesis, the show has misplaced a few of its focus. Inexperienced Arrow seems to be the star as a lot as Clark/Superman, and i also wrestle a bit with the decision to make small city geek Chloe into a super-spy. I do like the looks of the opposite heroes–the Justice Society, the Legion of Super-Heroes, Martian Manhunter, and so forth. I’m wondering what it would take to get an appearance from a young Bruce Wayne

Well, thanks once more for your comments, they are greatly appreciated!

I’m also principally partial to Christopher Reeves. Always thought he portrayed Superman finest as the ultimate boy scout but still likable. I say nonetheless because being completely good in every way might come off as actually annoying (cough Mary Poppins). Goodness knows it’s more durable now to do adaptations since having heroes of us can determine with or heroes with a bit of a darkish facet are more in. That’s why I also have to provide it up for Tom Welling for doing a decent job in Smallville…although I am concerned with a few of the writing in the previous couple of seasons.

Hello, Sabreblade. You already know, you are proper about George Reeves. He did have a sure smug look about him that the other actors who portrayed Superman by no means did. Only a tiny little smile that made you think he didn’t take any of it too seriously (as Superman and as an actor enjoying him). And, once you give it some thought, you in all probability could be somewhat cocky if crooks tried to shoot at you over and over.

Thanks once more for studying, Sabreblade. Hope you have a great weekend.
sabrebIade 7 years ago from Pennsylvania

Oh course I beloved Chris Reeve, but did you even notice that George Reeves generally made Superman kinda cocky I mean he was a very good guy and all, however sometimes he appeared on the dangerous guys like he was considering “Oh please.” Often after the millionth time some idiot shot at him. Seems to be like someone would have advised the crooks, “Guns don’t WORK on him!”

Andy, thanks for reading. I all the time thought it was a disgrace that “Superman Returns” appeared a lot a tribute to Chris Reeve and his portrayal. I by no means thought the movie gave Routh an opportunity to indicate what he might do. You are right, there was a bit of Smallville to the film that did not serve Routh properly, either. I read that Routh hopes to play the Man of Steel again, but another film has been held up by the want to make Superman movies darker in theme and scope, as has been performed with the Batman motion pictures.

On condition that, I wouldn’t mind seeing Routh given another probability with some fresh writing that does not draw from the outdated films so much. We’ll see, I suppose.

Thanks again on your feedback.

That was rather enlightening as beyond the obvious 6 I was unaware of the 80’s Television collection with John Haymes Newton and Gerard Christopher. Personally I might have putt Dean Cain above Tom Welling and Brandon Routh down to 6th. For me Routh’s model tried to capture Reeve’s model but then at the same time convey a little bit of “Smallville” to it and as such didn’t work. But then I doubt anyone will ever surpass Christopher Reeve’s performance as Superman.

Amez, thanks for visiting and leaving a comment. George Reeves was the Superman I knew as a child, and that i always admired how down-to-earth and cheap he appeared. It was a extremely enjoyable present to watch.

Nice Topic to build a Hub round, I actually liked George Reeves, most certainly as a result of thats when I really watch it on Television. I admire your analysis, was nice to see them all together and learn alittle about who they were indiviually.

rml, I like Tom Welling additionally. One of many good things a couple of tv collection, especially a collection that has run for 8+ years, is that you have an opportunity to develop the character and make it your own. Welling has executed that pretty nicely (no pun meant), and i give him credit score for the work he has achieved on the sequence.

Thanks in your comment.

The thought of utilizing nice powers in behalf of democracy was by no means extra evident than the tv tag line, citing a “never-ending battle for truth, justice and the American manner”. In that period the three had been seemingly synonymous, and the thought caught on as heroes like Captain America and the Human Torch duked it out with Hitler and the Nazis throughout childrens flash t shirt dress World Struggle II.

Thanks in your comments, Bill. They are much appreciated.

A wonderful job of analysis. Within the early sixties a critic named Seymour Krim did an essay on the political significance of the Superman character and decided that the unique comic-ebook character was an inversion of the Nietzschean “Ubermensch” stereotype into the widespread man utilizing such powers in behalf of democracy, not fascism, as within the case of other such heroes (notably Flash Gordon).

The identical democratic critique was later used to praise “Star Trek.”
BTW, as you most likely know, George Reeves seems in the primary scene of “Gone With the Wind” as one in every of Scarlett O’Hara’s suitors. Bill
